Man faces charges after chase
A Saturday arrest turned into a foot chase through the city with county sheriff's deputies. “I wanted you all to shoot me. Why wouldn't you shoot me?” said a quote in court documents attributed to Bradley S. Cramer, 32, of Butler, the alleged escapee.
The Butler County Sheriff's Office filed charges against Cramer on Tuesday, including three felonies, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and one count of escape. He is also charged with misdemeanors of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.
Following his arraignment by District Judge Kevin O'Donnell, Cramer was placed in Butler County Prison on $50,000 bond.
According to charging documents, deputies arrived around 12:30 p.m. at Butler Memorial Hospital to take custody of Cramer, who had been injured during a bench warrant arrest by Butler Township Police.
“He had reported an injury to his face and ankle,” said the deputy who filed the charges.
Deputies said Cramer needed to use the bathroom, so a portable toilet was wheeled into the room by hospital staff.
They said a handcuff was removed, so that Cramer could appropriately clean himself, and the deputies watched Cramer through the blinds.
“Moments later, Cramer started throwing himself at the door and pushing it open in an attempt to escape,” deputies said.
According to deputies, despite the two of them holding the door shut, Cramer burst through and began running through the hospital. Deputies said they were injured as they fell from force upon the door.
“Cramer did run through hospital staff and patients toward the ambulance doors, damaging the door in his escape,” deputies said.
Deputies said they chased Cramer outside, and a few times had a hand on his shirt, which eventually ripped off his body. Cramer ran down a set of stairs along the side of the building and toward the direction of Fourth Street.
“Just stop chasing me; please stop chasing me. I'm not going back to jail,” said the deputies, quoting Cramer.
The deputies called Butler County dispatchers to alert them of the chase, which continued down Fourth Street toward East Jefferson Street.
Deputies said Cramer eventually stopped and was held by his belt until Butler City Police arrived to assist. When authorities said they again went to cuff him, Cramer resisted, which continued beyond his placement in the cruiser. Deputies said it was at this time Cramer said he wanted to be shot by authorities. “Cramer was beating his head off the partition as we closed the door,” deputies said.
Cramer has a preliminary hearing scheduled July 29 before O'Donnell.
