Robert W. Bailey, 81, of Lancaster Township died Saturday at the St. John Specialty Care Center, Mars.

Born June 29, 1929, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of John L. and Ada Bailey.

Mr. Bailey was a U.S. Air Force World War II and a Korean War veteran, serving in occupied Japan during World War II. While in the Air Force, he painted tail wings on Gen. Matthew Ridgway's plane.

He also was a private pilot, built his own plane and previously co-owned several other aircraft.

Mr. Bailey owned and operated a full-size narrow-gauge railroad for 11 years. For seven years, he used a golf cart he fitted to ride the rails.

He also was a commercial artist for 25 years and a machinist at the former Bentley Industries for 18 years.

He is survived by his son, Robert S. Bailey (Christy) of Lancaster Township; five grandchildren, Cory Bailey, Hannah and Ben Linkel and Andreas and Noah Bailey; and a brother, Edward Bailey of Natrona Heights.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey (Riott) Bailey who died Feb. 27, 2010.
