ERIE — The estate of a Mars man killed when he was crushed between trucks in a 62-vehicle pileup on Interstate 90 three years ago will receive a monetary award from the state.

In a settlement announced Tuesday, just before the case was to go to trial, the state Department of Transportation said it would pay $50,000 to settle claims that it didn't warn drivers of snowy conditions on Interstate 90 that resulted in the massive pileup in January 2007.

The lawsuit that prompted the trial was filed by the parents of 42-year-old Terrance "Terry" Nagel of Mars.

The chain-reaction accident that happened Jan. 25, 2007, shut down traffic on a 22-mile section of I-90 in Harborcreek Township for 14 hours.

Thirteen people were hurt. Nagel was the only fatality.

PennDOT's settlement is the only one made public as all claims in the case were settled Tuesday.
