Summit students have first day at city school
The Summit Township Elementary students and staff had a successful first day Monday at Broad Street Elementary School, acting superintendent William Pettigrew said.
“The arrival seemed to work out well, it was well planned by Mr. Chwalik and the staff and we had a lot of cooperation from the city,” Pettigrew said.
Pettigrew noted that 12 out of 260 students were absent from school Monday, which is a typical number for this time of year, he said.
The district announced last week that it would use the vacant Broad Street building instead of Summit elementary, which has high concentrations of lead in its water.
Also Monday, the district announced that the Butler School Board will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Herman Fire Hall, located off Herman Road at 114 Marquis Lane, Summit Township.
Pettigrew said that the purpose of the meeting will be to update the community on what is being done to address the problems with the water system at Summit Township Elementary School. Officials will also be able to take questions and hear concerns from residents.
Pettigrew said that while filling in for former superintendent Dale Lumley, who resigned Sunday, he will continue in his capacity as head of the Summit project team, a committee that is working to fix the problems at the school.
