SR mayor donates his salary to 2 nonprofits

Longo's given $2,000 so far

SLIPPERY ROCK — 'Tis the season of giving after all.

Slippery Rock Mayor Jondavid Longo donated his quarterly mayoral salary to two Main Street nonprofits.

“In the spirit of Christmas, I have chosen to split this quarterly Mayoral salary donation between Our Angels Attic and Alpha Omega Center,” Longo said.

Longo's mayoral salary is $1,200 per year.

He said he donated every cent of the $2,000 he has earned since taking office in 2017. Each donation is about $250.

“I donate everything left over after taxes are taken out,” Longo said of his donations. “It's not much, but every bit helps those in need,”

In addition to his most recent recipients, Longo's salary has been donated to Feed My Sheep food bank, the local American Legion and VFW for funding the town's veteran banners, Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire & Rescue Team and the Butler County Alliance for Children.

“Tax dollars are what fund my salary. Citizens expect their tax dollars to be put to good use,” Longo said. “What better way to support our community than to put money right back into the businesses and organizations that support Slippery Rock every day?”

Sarah Bowen, executive director of the Alpha Omega Center, said the center does not receive any state or federal funding. The pregnancy medical center offers all of its services for free and serves many area colleges and high schools.

“Donations make a tremendous difference to our ministry and the number of families that we can help and can work with,” Bowen said.

The center offers pregnancy testing, ultrasound scans, parenting education and material help, among other functions.

Bowen said the center also performs educational outreach to local schools.

She said the majority of donations go toward programming.

“Our vision is to see a community where life is cherished from conception to natural death,” Bowen said of the group's mission.

Bowen said Longo has been a vocal supporter since taking office, and the financial support supplements the work he has already done to help their organization.

“It's incredibly encouraging for us to know that he believes in what we're doing,” Bowen said. “I think it helps people feel secure that we're doing good work and helping people in Slippery Rock.”

Patti Bicehouse, leader of the Our Angels Attic, said the funds they received from Longo will help keep the doors open, as do all donations they receive.

The nonprofit uses community vocational rehabilitation projects for individuals with disabilities in a natural, relaxed setting in an effort to promote education, support, employment and volunteering opportunities in the Slippery Rock community.

“Mayor Longo's donation helps another person with disabilities have the opportunity to gain work experience,” Bicehouse said.

Because the staff is solely volunteer-based, Bicehouse said the group relies heavily on the community for support.

She said while many community members donate the clothes sold at the shop, the nonprofit also needs to buy racks to hang them on, as well as pay the bills to keep the lights on.

“Our greatest expense is rent, utilities and marketing,” Bicehouse said. “Sales do not always cover those expenses.”

Bicehouse said she is thankful to Longo not only for his financial support but also for bringing attention to their organization's needs.

“We desperately are in need of monetary assistance,” Bicehouse said. “We have so much to offer the community. Please allow us to do what we do best, blessing each other while spreading joy.”
