Hickory sticks a golfing challenge
FOXBURG — Talk about your throw-backs.
Foxburg Country Club hosted its seventh Hickory Sticks Championship over the weekend, a two-day, 36-hole tournament featuring golf equipment used in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
“Since we've got the oldest course in terms of continuous use in America, it's always fitting to have that event here,” Foxburg CC board member Stephen Buzard said.
There were 26 golfers in the field, coming from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Canada, Wisconsin, Virginia and Kentucky.
They have to play with old hickory clubs with wooden shafts. They also play with authentic gutta percha golf balls, which were used more than 100 years ago.
“The old equipment makes for a unique tournament,” Buzard said. “If you hit the ball 150 yards off the tee, that's a good hit.”
Golfers wore the attire from that era as well, including knickers, argyle socks, bow ties and suspenders.
“Most of them bring their own stuff,” Buzard said of the golfers. “They travel around and play in tournaments like this.”
Dave Ellis has won the Hickory Sticks senior tournament division three times at Foxburg. Tom Johnson, the tourney organizer from Ohio, has won the overall open division twice.
Ted Theron, who also serves on the Foxburg CC board, won the member division portion of the event over the weekend. Theron is a Clarion County Commissioner.
Seth Abbington of Kentucky won the Senior Open division.
Foxburg CC houses the American Golf Hall of Fame with antique clubs from Scotland and originals from the 1600's, etc.
The golf course has 10 sets of hickory clubs available for rent to the public, for anyone interested in playing original golf.
