The Internet campaign to emotionally support a teenaged girl who is left comatose weeks after being struck by a car while running is so compelling it's catching on worldwide, yet so affective it keeps her family at peace.

“You have no idea how important it has been to get confirmation from friends and strangers to wish her well,” said Butler native Alan Offstein, Molly Offstein's grandfather. “The messages are from people we don't even know who have had similar issues or are just trying to be nice. It's made a big a difference for the whole family.”

Only months ago, his granddaughter was enjoying her freshman year at Elon University in North Carolina, where she is majoring in environmental and ecological science on a full honors scholarship.

Molly, who lives in Frostburg, Md., had been valedictorian at Mountain Ridge High School and proud owner of a healthy share of trophies, awards and accommodations relating to her passion of long distance running. She was Western Maryland Track Runner of the Year in 2015.

“She's a beautiful, smart and athletic girl,” said Offstein.

But Molly's world changed on March 6, when she was out for a practice run on campus and was struck by a car.

Molly, according to her grandfather, flew over the windshield and was thrown into a nearby patch of grass. Her pelvis was shattered. Her spleen and colon were injured. “But most concerning at this point is her traumatic brain injury,” Offstein said.

Doctors aren't exactly sure how or if Molly will recover.

Since the accident, Molly was first in a medically induced coma, and now she is in a vegetative state. On Wednesday, she was transferred to the Shepherd Center in Georgia, which is one of the nation's leading rehabilitation centers for people who have suffered brain and spinal cord injuries.

“It's so sad. She's 19 years old and has everything to look forward,” Offstein said. “It's a real rough time. She shows no signs of consciousness. She opens her eyes, but she doesn't react.”

Friends and family have started a GoFundMe account at https://www.gofundme.com/molly-offstein-help-molly-recover to help pay medical bills, which are sure to be long term.

The Internet fundraiser so far has raised more than $48,000. People can follow Molly's medical progress on Twitter at #FightasHardasYouRun. Another groundswell of support, for morale only, is the “Show Us Your Shoes” (#ShowUsYourShoes) campaign on Facebook.

“People all over the world have been posting pictures to support her,” Offstein said.

Molly is the daughter of Butler native Evan Offstein and Laura Bryne. Her sister, Madison Offstein, is a long distance runner at Princeton University.

Jody Offstein, owner of Furniture Galleries in Penn Township, is her uncle. He said customers, his brother's former classmates at the U.S. Military Academy, friends and strangers alike have reached out to support the family.

“Someone from every state in the country,” Jody Offstein said. “It's pretty amazing.”

Although Molly grew up in another state, it wasn't unusual for her to spend time at her grandfather's home in Meridian.

“She'd go running in Moraine or Meridian,” said Alan Offstein, who only recently took up running with encouragement from both of his granddaughters. “She certainly didn't discourage me,” he said.
