Mary Sovyak Arthurs

Mary Sovyak Arthurs, 94, of Valencia passed away peacefully Monday surrounded by her family.

Mary was born Jan. 7, 1922, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Harry and Mary (Tovcimac) Sovyak.

She graduated from Oliver High School, Class of 1940. In 1942, she graduated from the Pittsburgh Business Academy with honors.

She then became an executive secretary to the vice president at J & L Steel Corp. from 1942 until 1953, before she resigned to become a housewife and loving mother to her sons, Dale R. (Chris) and Dean A. Arthurs.

Mary was a lifelong member of the Holy Sepulcher Roman Catholic Church. She was also a member of Middlesex Township Volunteer Fire Department Women's Auxiliary.

She was married to the love of her life, E. Russell Arthurs, on June 1, 1946, until his death June 8, 2001.

She is survived by her children; one granddaughter, Dawn Arthurs Peck of Rochester, Pa.; and one brother, Fred Sovyak of Greensburg, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Harry; and three sisters, Ann Engleman, Agnes Jack and Alice Prohaska.

ARTHURS — Family of Mary Sovyak Arthurs, who died Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Schellhaas Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 5864 Heckert Road, Bakerstown.A blessing service will be at 8 p.m. Thursday following visitation at the funeral home. Interment private at the Mars Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's memory to the Middlesex Township V.F.D., 130 Brownshill Road, Valencia, PA 16059.Please offer condolences at www.schellhaasfh.com.
