Penn Twp man accused of pirating movies
PITTSBURGH — A Penn Township man is accused of being part of a movie pirating conspiracy.
Specifically, 38-year-old Brian D. Ridley of Winters Road is accused of trying to audio tape movies, according to a two-count indictment Tuesday by a grand jury in federal court.
The conspiracy worked this way: Some people would videotape newly-released movies in indoor theaters. Others would attend drive-in movie theaters and record the audio portion of the same movies.
The two parts would be sent over the Internet to a conspirator who would sync the audio and video files together. The completed tapes would be placed on the Internet for others to download.
The indictment accuses Ridley of attempting to audio tape movies at the Dependable Drive-In in Coraopolis between August 2011 and July 2014. The indictment specifically alleges Ridley attempted to record the audio portion of the movies on July 22, 2014: “Sex Tape,” “Planes: Fire and Rescue,” and “The Purge.”
Ridley was indicted on conspiracy and unauthorized recording of motion pictures.
