Cheers & Jeers ...

Cheers to the unnamed corrections officer at Butler County Prison who uncovered and stopped a sophisticated, nearly undetectable drug smuggling scheme.

Four inmates and two of their girlfriends were charged last week with concealing a drug in the seams of ordinary paper envelopes being mailed to the inmates.

The drug in question is suboxone, a synthetic opioid used much like methadone in the treatment of heroin addicts.

Suboxone comes in a very thin plastic strip that's difficult to see, said county Detective Timothy Fennell, who heads the county Drug Task Force.

Among the inmates facing charges is Justin P. Enslen, 26, of Connoquenessing Township, described by Fennell as the “mastermind” of the smuggling operation. Enslen has been in the prison since Feb. 21, charged in a head-on crash three days earlier that killed the other driver. State police said Enslen was driving home from a regular visit to a methadone clinic at the time of the Feb. 18 crash. Toxicology tests later showed he was impaired by heroin, morphine, methadone, marijuana and a prescription antiseizure drug.

While the law presumes Enslen innocent until proven guilty, the severity of the charges and pile-up of evidence justifies his continued confinement.

And a sharp-eyed corrections officer can be credited with cutting off a hazardous stream of prison contraband.

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” goes the line from “Romeo and Juliette,” but this is Shakespearean irony: Juliette, who speaks the line, dies in the final act for the sake of her own name.Names are important. Names can be crucial. A name conveys what a company stands for, as well as the region and values it represents. That's great reason to salute the Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber of Commerce, formerly THE CHAMBER of Commerce, Inc.The name change, announced Friday, reflects the direction the chamber has been working on since its inception three years ago with the merger of the Cranberry Area and Northern Allegheny County chambers of commerce.Rebecca Martin, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber, says the new name helps “illustrate the connection that the businesses corridor spans over our three counties.”Congratulations to the Chamber and its 1,100 business members as the Chamber continues to solidify and cultivate its vision for a vibrant, prospering community.

Volunteers for Meals on Wheels, who deliver warm meals and warm smiles to hundreds of people in the Butler area deserve not only a cheer, but continued — maybe renewed support — from the community. With Butler Meals on Wheels celebrating its 44th anniversary, it's a good time to think about and appreciate the important work done by the volunteer organization. From preparing meals in the kitchen of St. Peter's Anglican Church on East Jefferson Street, to delivering meals to 110 mostly homebound clients within a 10-miles of the Butler kitchen location, the program nurtures the body with healthy meals and the soul through human contact. For some seniors, the meal-delivery program is essential to allowing them to remain in their homes. They might be mostly self-sufficient, but preparing and cooking meals is oftentimes beyond their ability. That's where Meals on Wheels comes in.And the Monday through Friday visits not only feeds clients with a meal and a friendly smile or caring touch on the shoulder, but the regular visits is also a sort of monitoring system for the general well-being of clients, who often live alone.Butler's program has a team of about 150 volunteers, with about 30 working each week. Still, there is a need for more help to keep the program going.Volunteers are needed in the kitchen and also on the road, either driving or delivering the meals.Anyone interested in offering a helping hand — either in the kitchen or with deliveries — should call Sandi Sandrick, volunteer coordinator, at 724-285-9573.
