The charges continue to mount for a western New York teenager being held in the Butler County Prison for allegedly starting a fire near Slippery Rock last week.

Earlier this week, Jonathan H. Young, 19, of Jamestown was charged in his hometown with intentionally setting a dozen fires there in March.

On Friday, state police in Warren County charged him with breaking into a home and stealing a car.

That crime, investigators say, occurred March 26 or 27 — a day or two after he allegedly set his last fire in New York and a day or two before he allegedly set the fire at a vacant house off Route 8 in Slippery Rock Township.

Police in the latest case accused Young of breaking into the attached garage at a home in Pine Grove Township. He then opened an unlocked door of the house, said police Cpl. Mark Cumberland.

“He took a set of car keys and stole a 2017 Toyota Corolla that was in the garage,” Cumberland said.

The car was eventually recovered in the Oil City area in Venango County. Cumberland said the vehicle was apparently undamaged.

Young is charged in a felony arrest warrant with burglary, theft and loitering and prowling at night.

The defendant has been in the Butler County Prison on $75,000 bail since March 28, when state police caught him only minutes after a fire badly damaged a two-story home owned by Frank and Betty Davis on Davis Lane.

The house had been vacant for some time and was being used as Frank Davis’ woodworking shop.

A neighbor reported seeing a man at the home moments before the fire. Young, who matched that man’s description, was stopped at a nearby hot dog stand. Police later arrested him.

District Judge Bill O’Donnell at a preliminary hearing Wednesday ordered the defendant held for trial on charges of burglary, arson and theft.

At the hearing, Trooper Christopher Balcik testified that Young during a Tuesday interview confessed to setting the fire with a cigarette lighter.

On Wednesday, Jamestown police charged the defendant with 12 counts of arson for allegedly setting a dozen fires between March 2 and 25, mostly at abandoned or condemned homes and apartments in that city in Chautauqua County.

Pennsylvania State Police, meanwhile, are investigating if any additional suspicious and unsolved fires between Butler County and the New York border could be linked to Young.
