Wolf praises National Guard

Gov. Tom Wolf on Friday again acknowledged the service of the Pennsylvania National Guard throughout the pandemic.

“At a time of uncertainty, facing a whole new kind of enemy, the Pennsylvania National Guard lived up to its slogan 'We live here, we train here, we serve here,'” Wolf said in a news release Friday.

The Pennsylvania National Guard has yet to be needed in Butler County's fight with COVID-19.

The county saw three new confirmed cases reported as part of Friday's update by the state Department of Health. The county now has a total of 681 confirmed cases of the virus since the pandemic began. The county's death toll remained at 17.

Butler Health System on Friday reported treating two inpatients at Butler Memorial Hospital for COVID-19 symptoms. One has a confirmed case of the virus, and the second is suspected of having the virus.

While not needed in Butler County, the National Guard had been called to help regain control of an outbreak in Brighton Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Beaver County. The Guard assisted with staffing shortages and later facilitated a transition in management.

According to a report released Tuesday, the facility has had 332 COVID-19 cases in residents since the pandemic began, and 73 of those residents have died. The report also said 115 staff members tested positive.

The Pennsylvania National Guard, the second-largest National Guard in the country, typically responds in times of disaster with services such as search and rescue, supply distributions and emergency health care.

“Pennsylvania called and without hesitation, the Guard answered, leaving behind family and putting their careers on hold,” Wolf said. “Thousands of Pennsylvania citizens are healthy and safe thanks to this selfless sacrifice.”
