SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds doesn't expect to play this season because of his injured right knee, putting the San Francisco slugger's quest for the career home run record on hold until at least 2006.Bonds told MLB.com Monday that he thought he was improving, but possibly too slowly for him to make a return this season.Bonds said a recent MRI showed some fluid building up in the knee that has been operated on three times since Jan. 31. He said his doctors advised him to wait until next year to return to the Giants.Bonds has 703 home runs, third on the career list behind Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (755).

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Terrell Owens reported to training camp Monday, ending months of speculation about whether the disgruntled All-Pro receiver would hold out because of a contract dispute with the Philadelphia Eagles.Though Owens refused to answer questions, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, accompanied him and said he will meet with Eagles coach Andy Reid and president Joe Banner today to discuss his client's contract.

MIAMI - The Florida Panthers signed four-time NHL All-Star center Joe Nieuwendyk and left wing Gary Roberts away from the Toronto Maple Leafs Monday, less than two hours into the free agent signing period.Both players were unrestricted free agents and the first to agree to contracts after the signing period began at noon EDT.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Golfer John Daly sued The Florida Times-Union and its Web site Monday, contending he was defamed by a columnist who called the golfer a thug who allegedly beats women.Columnist Mike Freeman's article appeared during The Players Championship last spring. It discusses Daly's past and how fans continue to root for him. The former British Open and PGA champion is known for his battles with alcohol, his temper and his weight and chain smokes on the course.
