Butler City firefighters want every young resident to be warm in the brutal cold that has descended on the area recently, so they are handing out 56 brand new coats.

Firefighter Jeff Scott said families who cannot afford a warm coat for their children can come to the fire station on North Washington Street between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to retrieve a coat, until they are gone.

Scott said the firefighters’ union, International Association of Firefighters Local 114, donated money and firefighters asked locals for sponsorships for the coat giveaway.

The fire station is stocked with 30 girls coats sized 7/8 to 14/16 and 36 boys coats in sizes 7/8 to 18.

“With the temperatures being the way they are, we want to get these coats out to the kids who need them,” Scott said.

There are no accessories like hats and gloves, just warm winter coats for needy children, Scott said.

“Anything we can do to help,” he said.
