Fire damages basement of city home
Butler firefighters extinguished a basement fire on Sherman Avenue this morning.
Lt. Scott Marshall of the Butler Fire Department said the female occupant, whose name was unavailable, was able to prevent the fire from spreading from the basement bedroom.
“She was smart,” Marshall said. “She closed the basement door. She starved the fire.”
After responding to the 10:47 a.m. 911 call, firefighters doused the flames.
“There's a lot of smoke damage in the entire house,” Marshall said.
He estimated damages at $10,000 to $15,000.
Marshall said the woman and her father, who owns the house, will have to stay somewhere else due to the residual smell of smoke.
The Veterans Affairs fire department assisted the city department.
