Butler County's great daily newspaper

Kudos and all the best to newly sworn-in officials

On Monday morning, Butler County and Butler city each ushered in a new batch of elected personnel to serve the community. It was our pleasure to get to know them each a little better through the election process, and based on the way they conducted themselves and their campaigns, we have every reason to expect they will serve with dignity, compassion and a true sense of servitude.

While some of their election opponents spewed insults and untruths as a routine part of how they campaign (a great indicator of how they would act if elected), the people who raised their right hands and spoke solemn vows rose above what has become the ugliness of even local politics conducted by internet warriors, kept their comments respectful and were able to stand up on Monday with clean consciences that not only did the public affirm their worthiness to serve, but also believe that our community will be best served by the selections the community made.

Not one of the new community leaders has spoken a word against the person or persons they defeated. They didn’t run to claim the right to trash other people who preceded them or the people who didn’t win this election, the previous election or the next one which they may enter. Cream rises to the top and leopards don’t change their spots. Two old axioms you don’t always hear, but are just as true today as ever.

These fine people have accepted the challenge of you, the voters, to continue to make Butler and Butler County a wonderful place to live. Give them your support, and next time someone tries to tell you what a terrible place this is, what a corrupt system we have or how they have the ability to fix all the world’s trouble, remember what ugliness and drama they brought to a local election.

We wish all of the new officeholders the very best experience as they enter a new chapter of community service. Be strong in your beliefs that carried you thus far and humbly do your job the best you can. Character leads to honesty, and honesty will let you sleep well at night. Happy New Year and God bless Butler County.
