Police shoot, kill suspect; K-9 diesWILKINSBURG — Authorities have identified a suspect shot and killed by police in Western Pennsylvania after a K-9 officer was stabbed to death.Port Authority Police Chief Matthew Porter and Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt say 37-year-old Bruce Kelley Jr. was killed by officers Sunday afternoon in Wilkinsburg, about 6 miles east of Pittsburgh.Moffatt says two officers found a father and son drinking in a gazebo and an altercation broke out between them. Authorities say Kelley, who was homeless, fought an officer and the officer had to be hospitalized.Authorities unsuccessfully tried to stun Kelley, prompting the deployment of K-9 Officer Aren. Moffatt says officers killed Kelley after he stabbed the dog.Porter says two officers are on administrative leave.A necropsy is expected to be performed on Aren.

Sickly bear trapped and euthanizedPITTSBURGH — Authorities say a sickly bear wasting away with an advanced case of mange was trapped and euthanized.The Pennsylvania Game Commission had been seeking the adult female since residents reported it near Kittanning recently.Rodney Burns, a wildlife conservation officer for the commission said he responded to a homeowner’s report of the bear and set a trap Wednesday.After the bear was trapped Friday, he saw it had lost 25 percent to 35 percent of its body weight and most of its hair, without which it wouldn’t survive the winter.
