Frederick Joseph Mullner Jr.
Frederick Joseph Mullner Jr., 77, of Butler entered the Kingdom of Heaven, reuniting with his beloved wife Thursday. He passed peacefully after developing complications related to his treatment for pancreatic cancer.
Born Sept. 9, 1940, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Frederick Joseph Mullner and Elizabeth Cook Mullner.
Fred was a 1958 graduate of Butler High School after which he attended Penn State University.
He served our country proudly in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve.
He was employed at Butler ARMCO and for 18 years at United Telephone. While at United Telephone, he owned and operated with his brother Ricardo's Restaurant on New Castle Road, eventually leaving the phone company to devote himself to the restaurant full time. After the closing of Ricardo's, Fred became the food service director for Butler School District until his retirement in 2009.
Fred was a faithful member of St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the choir for more than 40 years.
He was a member of Butler School Board from 1991 to 1993, the Butler Elks Club, Meridian Veterans Club and the Oak View Golf Course.
As a young man, he was a member of Meridian Volunteer Fire Co. and was one of their former chiefs.
He owned and operated Smoky Mountain Barbecue and catered pig roasts everywhere. Well known for his hospitality and humor, Fred was most of all a man of deep faith among the huge circle of friends which with he was blessed.
Fred was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He especially enjoyed the music of the 1950s and he and his wife regularly attended 1950s dances. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
Fred married Saundra Capella Mullner on May 12, 1973, and sadly she preceded him in death March 12, 2015.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his son, Frederick T. Mullner of Pittsburgh; and his daughter, Betsy Duncan and her husband, Christopher, of Zelienople; one grandson, Sean Duncan; his sister, Betty Jean Srock of Penn Township; and 10 nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Fred was also preceded in death by one brother, James Michael Mullner; and one sister, Elaine Hawthorne.
