Norris

Melvin Newton “Newt” Norris, 88, a resident of 1 Genkinger Drive, Zelienople, and a former well-known Franklin resident, died peacefully at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in his home.

He was born April 6, 1923, in Gibsonia, a beloved son of the late Arthur Melvin Norris and Annie Stirling Norris.

Mr. Norris attended Springdale High School and graduated in 1941. Upon graduation, he proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the World War II.

Following his honorable discharge from active duty, Mr. Norris enrolled at Penn State University, where he graduated with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.

He was employed for more than 25 years at the Joy Manufacturing Co. of Franklin as an electrical engineer. He developed and held numerous patents while working for Joy, with his favorite development and project being The Push Button Miner. He retired in 1983.

Mr. Norris was an active member of the Park United Presbyterian Church of Zelienople.

He enjoyed golfing and gardening around his home. He looked forward to camping with his family in their Nimrod Camper, having visited 40 of the 50 states with them. He had a lifelong passion for British racing cars, having owned several throughout his lifetime. His favorite, by far, was his 1956 Morgan.

He was married June 17, 1949, to the former Marvel Porter, and she preceded him in death on March 6, 1984. He then married Lois Williams in 1987. She preceded him in death, just weeks ago, on Sept. 29, 2011.

He is survived by his children, Barbara Ross and her husband, Kevin, of Franklin, Matthew Norris and his wife, Beckie, of Wood, N.C., and Joseph Norris and his wife, Elizabeth Lander, of Dublin, Ohio; his stepchildren, David Williams and his wife, Kathy, of Penn Hills and Debra McCambridge and her husband, Douglas, of Revere, Pa.; his grandchildren, Nicholas, Jesse and Kiefer Norris, Megan and Jacob Norris, Paul and Jill McCambridge, and Kelly Williams; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by one brother, Matthew Stirling Norris.

<B>NORRIS</B> — Friends of Melvin Newton “Newt” Norris, who died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the <B>Timothy E. Hartle Funeral Home</B>, 1328 Elk St., Franklin. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home with Rev.
