Nov. 18, 1888 - Sept. 20, 1968Nelson Kerr Thompson was a college football, basketball and baseball coach at Slippery Rock University.Born in Butler County in 1888, Kerr Thompson graduated from Slippery Rock in 1908.His first coaching job was as football and basketball coach at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., from 1916-1917.He coached the SRU football team from 1920 to 1945, the SRU basketball team in two stints from 1919 to 1926 and from 1930 to 1947 and the SRU baseball team from 1948 to 1955.As football coach, Kerr Thompson led the Rock to a 126-58-1 overall record, a dozen divisional championships and eight state championships. He coached four unbeaten teams.As basketball coach, Kerr Thompson had a 271-135 record.He was inducted into the SRU Hall of Fame in 1984, and SRU's current football stadium, Mihalik- Thompson Stadium, is named, in part, in his honor.
