Seneca Valley grad qualifies for Crossfit event

CRANBERRY TWP — Ethan Helbig is fit for just about anything.

At least, he better be.

Helbig, 21, a 2014 Seneca Valley graduate and former Raider hockey player, has qualified for the CrossFit Atlantic Regional in Atlanta, Ga., this weekend. He did so through an online video scoring system.

“That was five workouts over five weekends, various physical activities,” Helbig explained. “You video everything and submit it for scoring online.”

Helbig competes in the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes competitors from five neighboring states. That region combines with the Southeast region in an attempt to get to Atlanta.

The top 20 scores from each of those two regions qualify. Helbig was ranked 13th out of 1,250 male competitors in the Mid-Atlantic region.

“That’s one of the heaviest populated regions in the country for cross-fit,” he said.

Of the 40 men competing at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta this weekend, the top five will advance to the national cross-fit competition Aug. 3-6 in Madison, Wisc.

Getting there won’t be easy.
