Rivers focus of tour

10 historic sites offered

FOXBURG — Volunteers at the Foxburg Area Information Center hope the history of the Allegheny and Clarion rivers is a draw for outsiders and local residents alike.

They are planning a tour on Saturday that will take participants to 10 historic sites in the Allegheny-Clarion Valley area.

At a cost of $5 per person, participants will receive a map and directions to the locations, which can be visited between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Proceeds from ticket sales, as well as up to $1,000 in matching funds from the Modern Woodmen of America, will help to renovate The Red Caboose, one of the sites on the tour.

The caboose on Main Street in the borough is home to the information center, which is staffed with volunteers who promote business and historical interest in the surrounding communities.

"We kind of act like a chamber (of commerce), but we're not," said Rose Kalinowsky, one of the volunteers. "We feel it's important for all our communities to work together. It's our goal to motivate the people in the whole area to see what a treasure they have here."

Other sites on the tour include:

• A display of 18 classic automobiles owned by Mike Salusky at Salusky Farms next to the former Emlenton Airport.

• The St. Petersburg Historical Society and Museum, which will be open for the first time. Ahighlight is an 1873 hose cart from the original fire department.

• The Foxburg Country Club and Golf Hall of Fame, where guests will be greeted by historian Ray Rossi and Barb McKissick, granddaughter of Kenneth Christy, the original promoter of the museum.

• The Foxburg Free Library, where participants can take a self-guided tour of area history through portraits, photographs and paintings.

• The Parker City-Allegheny Valley Lodge No. 521, F.&A.M., which was built in 1873.

• The Allegheny Township One-Room School, also known as the Six Points School, where former students will share stories of their school days.

• The Emlenton Old Mill, which still houses much of its original equipment.

• The Pumping Jack Museum and Oil Heritage Visitor Center at the former Emlenton School, where a series of panels depict Emlenton's history.

• The home of Tom Hovis in Scrubgrass Township, where Hovis will display a collection of firearms dating back to the Revolutionary War.
