House spared from fire in garage
ADAMS TWP — A quick-acting homeowner and volunteer firefighters prevented a Monday night garage blaze from spreading to the attached house on Pearce Road.
Chief Bill Hayes of the Adams Area Fire District said this morning the husband of the couple in the home used a garden hose to keep the flames from spreading to the house until crews arrived.
“He did a pretty good job,” Hayes said.
After nearly 30 volunteers responded to the 8:02 p.m. 911 call, they quelled the fire.
“We kept it confined into the garage,” Hayes said.
Under phone listings, 115 Pearce Road is listed as the Jonathan Spuntak residence.
As a precaution, the husband was taken to UPMC Passavant Cranberry for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Hayes said the cause of the fire was electrical.
“Some sort of electrical malfunction happened,” he said.
Hayes estimated damages at roughly $20,000.
The couple were temporarily displaced because electricity to the home was shut off until a safety inspection could be done.
The Middlesex Township, Callery and Evans City volunteer fire departments assisted the Adams Area Fire District.
Hayes said Three Degree Road was shut down due to the lack of fire hydrants near the house.
“We laid about 2,000 feet of hose,” he said.
Crews cleared the scene shortly before 10 p.m.
