SV's JROTC heralded as Honor Unit

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley's JROTC program added another accomplishment to the school district's goal to be “proud of the past.”

The Army named the corps an Honor Unit with Distinction, a title awarded to JROTCs with a high level of proficiency.

Seneca Valley's program received that honor after a two-part evaluation process consisting of a formal inspection and unit report. The award is for its proficiency in the 2018–19 school year.

Not only will the cadet students be able to say they are members of the distinguished corps, they will have a physical reminder: a star on their uniform.

“The kids have something to be proud of,” said retired 1st Sgt. Angelo Lettiere, Army JROTC instructor. “It's a prestigious honor.”

The distinction also can help cadet students attain future successes. “We can help our cadet students get into a military academy by writing a recommendation letter and it being part of their packet,” he said.

The new designation is the highest award for JROTC programs, said retired Maj. Rick Coleman, senior Army JROTC instructor. He said the support from the school district and the clear abilities of the student cadets made the program stand apart.
