Homer in 9th does in BlueSox

Champion City wins with 2-out solo blast

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Alexander Erro’s two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Champion City Kings to a 9-8 victory over the visiting Butler BlueSox in Prospect League baseball play Tuesday night.

Erro is hitting .370 on the season.

The decisive long ball came against Butler’s Jack Herzing, who took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

The Sox trailed 8-6 entering the ninth, but scored twice to tie the game. Calvin Scott’s bases-loaded walk scored Ben Carew before Tanner Murphy raced home following a wild pitch from Austin Marchant. Both runs were charged to reliever Austin Moreland, who began the inning on the mound for the Kings (10-8).

Damian Maglione hit a solo home run for Butler while James Meeker and Kristian Webb both had three hits, including a double.

Butler graduate Mark Gross started on the mound for the BlueSox Though he struck out five and did not walk a batter in six innings, he also allowed six runs on nine hits.

Champion City used six pitchers in the contest. Jake Vance started and worked six innings, striking out five and allowing three runs.

The BlueSox (8-10) conclude their two-game series against Champion City tonight. Butler is winless in five games against the Kings.

The BlueSox return home Thursday night when they host the East Division-leading Chillicothe Paints.
