Right down to his final meeting as a member of the Butler County Bowling Association’s Board of Directors, his voice was heard.

That meeting was Wednesday — and Jim Bowser expressed concern about this year’s BCBA Hall of Fame dinner.

Plans for the dinner have not been finalized, the inductees not determined. These things will happen.

But Bowser will never stop caring about bowling in Butler County.

And for that, everyone involved in the sport around here should be thankful.

Bowser served as manager of the Butler County Bowling Association for 20 years. He’s been a league bowler for 40 years. He has served as president of the Pennsylvania State Bowling Association and was one of the driving forces behind the PSBA Tournament coming to Butler three times.

Once Bowser decided to step down as BCBA manager in 2013 — that position since passed along to Rich Warheit — he sttayed on as a member of the board until this past Wednesday.

Even with this latest farewell, Bowser’s work with bowling in the county isn’t done.

He will be a member of the transition committee over the next year as the county’s men’s, women’s and youth bowling associations are merging as one, as mandated by the state association.

His participation in this regard is to help ensure that Butler County bowling will be well organized and beneficial to association members moving forward.

Again, the man cares.

The passion Jim Bowser has for bowling just isn’t found in too many people. He has the personality that makes people want to work with him. You can’t help but enjoy being around the guy.

During his final board meeting, Bowser could have sat there quietly, completed his calendar obligation to his fellow committee members and walked away.

Anyone who knows him knew there was no way that was gonna happen.

If he has something on his mind, he speaks it.

If there is a point to be raised, he raises it.

If he believes he can make a difference, he tries to make a difference.

Our board is going to miss that. Our board — and any governing body overseeing any sport — needs more of that.

It’s loyalty, passion and the willingness to follow through that makes somebody a leader.

Jim Bowser has been a leader in the Butler County Bowling Association for years now, even after he stepped down as county manager.

Somehow, some way, his voice will continue to be heard in the bowling community. But once the transition of the county’s three bowling organizations into one is complete, Bowser will likely call it a day in terms of hands-on participation as a board member.

We all will miss him.

We all — as Butler County bowlers — should thank him.
