Scoop seeking big finish in playoffs

And then there were three.

Our football field has been reduced to just Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, Karns City and Grove City, and each of those teams play on different nights this week.

How convenient. It allows the Ol’ Scoopster to check out all three contests.

You won’t recognize me. I’ll be in my civilian clothes.

If you did recognize me, you might want to pat me on my back.

I went 6-0 last week to run my season record to 92-22.

Not bad considering I started the year 10-8, so that’s an 82-14 mark since.

Let’s see if I can go 3-0 this week.

On to the picks:

Karns City 34, Punxsutawney 30 — In this Thursday night game at Clarion University, this one is for the District 10 3A championship.

It’s also a rematch of a game from Sept. 22 in which the Gremlins beat the Chucks in a shootout, 42-32.

Dalton Beham ran amok in that first meeting, gaining 279 yards on the ground and scored five touchdowns.

Punxsy quarterback Dylan Ishman threw ... amok — well, he threw for a lot of yards, 303 of them, and touchdowns, four of them.

This could be another track meet.

I always take Karns City in games like this because, for one, they almost always win them, and for two, I always bet on Ed Conto with a week off before a big game.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 30, Serra Catholic 21 — In this Friday night game at Hampton High School, North Catholic scores a bunch of points and Serra Catholic gives up a bunch of points.

Not really a good combination for a second-round WPIAL 2A playoff game.

The Trojans have a potent passing game, keyed by Zack Rocco. The lefty has thrown for more than 2,000 yards and 27 touchdowns this season.

Toss in running back Joe Meinert, who has rushed more than 1,000 yards and is also one of the leading receivers and North Catholic is about as dangerous as they come.

That’s why I’m picking the Trojans to move on.

Grove City 36, Meadville 17 — In this Saturday night game in Greenville, Grove City and Meadville clash for the second time in three weeks in the District 10 5A championship game.

The last time the two teams met, the Eagles rolled to a 41-13 win.

That victory avenged two losses to the Bulldogs last season, including one in the championship game.

This year, that script has flipped and it will flip again.

Grove City does too many things well for Meadville to be able to stop them all. The Eagles are aware how dangerous the Bulldogs are and Meadville will break off a few big plays, but not enough.

The Eagles win a D-10 crown, their first since 2011.
