Like dad
BUFFALO TWP — After eight years, Lee Jacobs finally did it like Dad.
The Dalton, Ohio driver of the No. 81 car started in the front row of the All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint feature Friday night at Lernerville Speedway and won it going away.
Jacobs led by a wide margin for most of the 30 laps and never surrendered the lead in winning his first career feature in the All-Star series.
“I was a little nervous there toward the end because I knew I was getting slower ... and I've finished second to these guys in about 15 of these races,” Jacobs said.
He had run the series for eight years before finally finding victory lane. His father, Kenny Jacobs, is second on the all-time list of All-Star feature wins, trailing only Dale Blaney.
“Dad's won races here numerous times. His last all-star win was here,” Jacobs said. “My only regret is that my father, wife and kid aren't here to see this.
“The threat of rain kept Dad from coming out, but this is awesome. You just don't know how good this feels.”
Jac Haudenschild finished a distant second while Danny Holtgraver of Pittsburgh — who won at Lernerville on opening night — took third.
“It was tough to pass tonight,” said Holtgraver, who started from the seventh spot. “The bottom was narrow, the top was narrow.
“I had the speed and did what I could. There were a lot of good cars out there.”
Rain fell briefly before the start of the feature, but Holtgraver said the moisture “was blown off after one and a half laps or so. It was a non-factor.”
Blaney, who recently won his 100th career all-star race, made the biggest gain in the feature, starting 14th and finishing fourth. He briefly passed Holtgraver for third before the latter regained the position.
“I was as fast as anybody out there, but you have to qualify better,” Blaney said. “I had motor problems earlier and qualified poorly.
“Passing 10 cars in a race like this, I'm happy with that. But we didn't qualify well and that was tonight's story for us.”
Ed Lynch Jr., Lernerville's all-time Sprint win leader with 108, qualified for the Fast Dash, but finished sixth of the six cars.
Lynch started the feature sixth and finished ninth.
“We missed the set-up tonight, that's all,” Lynch said. “The car is good. I'll race a different car (Saturday night) at Mercer, but I'll take this one to Charlotte (May 23).”
This night was all about Jacobs.
“It's not like we haven't been able to compete,” he said. “I'll put my car up against anybody's. I've led races in this series for 29 laps and lost on the last one.
“Tonight, it came together.”
Jacobs said he jumped from team to team over the past two years and “probably watched more races than I was in.”
But he learned something.
“When it comes to lapped cars, you either move them or they move themselves,” Jacobs said. “You can't stay behind them. With five laps left tonight, there were lapped cars running three-wide in front of me.
“I knew I had to pick them off, one at a time each lap. It all worked out.”
Jacobs' win was his first career Lernerville triumph as well.
Two other drivers — Dan Angelicchio of Greensburg in the RUSH Late Models and Adam Hilton of Buffalo, N.Y., in the RUSH Sportsman Modifieds — claimed their first-ever Lernerville feature wins Friday night.
Notes: There were 55 cars in the pits. ...
