SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock Mayor Ron Fodor will be out after one term in office, losing in the Republican primary Tuesday to U.S. Marine Corps veteran Jon David Longo.

There were no Democrats on the ballot.

Longo, 26, prevailed in the GOP primary, winning 120 votes, or more than 54 percent of the vote, to Fodor's 97 votes, according to unofficial vote totals posted online by county officials.

Longo, who left the Marines in 2014 and currently works for North Country Brewing, called his victory over Fodor an “overwhelming experience.”

“I'm very, very thankful for everyone's overwhelming support and kind words,” he said. “It's been an overwhelming experience.”

Longo said that unexpectedly strong turnout — about 23.5 percent, according to the county's unofficial tally — worked in his favor.

“I think a lot more folks showed up than anybody expected,” he said. Longo's pledge to be an active and articulate mayor unafraid to advocate for residents' concerns apparently resonated with voters.

“I think folks really were just concerned that they didn't have a voice to carry their concerns to the borough council,” he said. “They were looking for someone who would be vocal and not be afraid to go to bat for them.”

Fodor, 64, has been a mainstay in borough government for more than two decades, serving on various boards and on borough council before being elected mayor in 2013.
