The Art Center is looking for artists/photographers to enter the upcoming Juried Photography Show that will run Feb. 7 to 28.

The opening reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 7 at The Art Center, 344 S. Main St.

Both film and digital images are being accepted. Works can be dropped off at The Art Center from noon to 6 p.m. today and Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Entry fee is $15 for up to three pieces and $5 per piece for up to two more pieces. Members get a $5 discount.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Chinese cuisine, games, entertainment and door prizes will be featured when Slippery Rock University celebrates the 2014 Chinese New Year from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Slippery Rock Township Building, 155 Branchton Road.SRU students, faculty, staff and local residents organized this free “Year of the Horse” program.SRU students will perform Peking opera songs, a Chinese Han dance and music on a Chinese instrument.The event marks the “Year of the Horse” in the Chinese horoscope.SRU's Chinese Cultural Association, Modern China Center and the Asian Studies Program are the sponsors.

HARMONY — The bicentennial of New Harmony, Ind., will be celebrated at Historic Harmony's annual Harmoniefest at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 at Stewart Hall. The evening will include a presentation by Connie Weinzapfel, director of Historic New Harmony.The communal Harmony Society, founder of the town of Harmony, Butler County, began to create its second home in the Indiana Territory in 1814.Awards to be presented will recognize area residents for preservation, rehabilitation and neighborhood improvement successes, as well as volunteers for Historic Harmony, the group that operates the Harmony Museum.The program also will include music by Butler banjo player Nic Landon in commemoration of Stephen Foster 150 years after his death — he lived in Harmony briefly during 1832.Admission is $30 per person, and paid reservations are required by Feb. 7. TITUSVILLE — Drake Well Museum will host a Pithole Sledding Party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 8, weather permitting, at the Pithole historic site located on Pithole Road just off Route 227 near Plumer.Admission is free. Crooked Creek Environmental Learning Center will be the site of a free program on how to participate in Frogwatch USA, presented by the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 9.Frogwatch is a citizen science program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums that invites people to learn about the wetlands in their communities and help conserve amphibians by reporting the calls of area frogs and toads.For more information, call the Audubon Society at 412-963-6100 or the Crooked Creek center at 724-763-6316.Registration is not necessary but is requested.

NEW CASTLE — The New Castle Playhouse will stage the play “Other Desert Cities” Feb. 7 to 16 in the Annex Theater, 212 E. Long Ave.The show will run at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 9 and 16.The play is set in Palm Springs where the Wyeth family gathers at Christmas to find out that daughter Brooke is about to publish a memoir dredging up a pivotal and tragic event in the family’s history.Tickets are $13.
