2 make case against Adams left turn restriction

PennDOT says rule permanent

ADAMS TWP — Monday night's board of supervisors meeting opened with two township residents, who spoke about the new no left-turn rule placed on Beaver Street Extension from Route 228.

Beaver Street in Adams Township connects Route 228 to Mars.

John Watson, who lives along Forsythe Road, presented vehicle crash statistics he found on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation website.

Citing PennDOT records, Watson said the township has not had many crashes at the Beaver Street-Route 228 intersection.

“In 2018, we had two reportable accidents that happened,” Watson said. “2017, we had four.”

Watson recognized rush hour at the intersection can cause traffic congestion.

But he told supervisors there are probably fewer accidents on Route 228 than other main roads, as traffic prevents fast driving.

Watson argued prohibiting left turns altogether was unnecessary. He suggested the rule be in place during specific times.

“A lot of people are upset in Mars,” Watson said. “It's probably one of the safer intersections ... that goes across (Route) 228 in Adams Township.”

“It's causing havoc for people that have worked, lived here all our lives,” said Tom Bonzer.

Bonzer, who lives along Beech Alley, said if Beaver Street Extension is eligible for a no left-turn restriction, other parts of Route 228 should be, too.

Bonzer told supervisors he was driving home from work last week on Route 228 and ended up sitting in traffic near Mars Area High School.

“I figure (drivers) shouldn't be allowed to turn (left) into the high school,” Bonzer said. “That's more of a traffic stop there.”

Supervisor Chairman Thomas Franceschina thanked Watson and Bonzer for their comments.

PennDOT informed the Eagle last week the no left-turn restriction is permanent, barring any significant changes in traffic conditions.
