Woman's death still a mystery
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Foul play is not suspected in the death of a 38-year-old township woman who was found barely alive in a roadside ditch near her home Sunday afternoon, state police said.
While police are still calling Kara Anne Kendziorski’s death “suspicious,” investigators have not ruled out drugs as a possible factor in her death.
Kendziorski was clinging to life shortly after 2 p.m. when a male friend called 911 to report finding her on the side of Ralston Road near Rock Falls, authorities said.
Police believe she may have been there for several hours before medical help arrived.
She was rushed to Butler Memorial Hospital, where she died about two hours later.
An autopsy later Sunday did not conclusively determine the cause or manner of death, said Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr.
Investigators are awaiting results of toxicology tests, which could shed more light into her death, Barr said. Those findings could take several weeks or more.
Police Lt. Eric Hermick said there was no immediate sign of trauma on the body. He would not identify the friend who found Kendziorski in the ditch that had a couple of inches of water on the bottom.
“He said he found her lying in the (ditch),” Hermick said of the man. “He said she was unconscious and barely breathing.”
There apparently was no blood at the scene, authorities said.
The friend who found Kendziorski lives on the property there. Police said he has “cooperated throughout the investigation” and is not considered a suspect.
He also gave his consent to police to search his home.
Paramedics got there and tended to the woman before she was taken to the hospital. She was pronounced dead at 4:02 p.m.
Hermick said police are trying to establish a timeline of Kendziorski’s whereabouts before she ended up in the ditch between one-quarter and one-half mile from her rental mobile home.
Police said they believe she walked there to visit with friends and acquaintances who live in a “cluster of homes.”
One investigator noted that police have a “loose timeline” of Kendziorski’s movements on Saturday, after reviewing her phone records and talking with friends and associates.
The investigator would not say if police know where she was Sunday up until the time she ended up in the ditch.
Part of the investigation is reviewing surveillance footage from establishments that she frequented that day. He would not elaborate.
“We’re still chasing leads,” Hermick said this morning.
Police said they searched Kendziorski’s home and removed evidence, which they would not disclose.
Kendziorski’s criminal records show several drug convictions but police did not immediately say if that is one theory they are looking at to explain her death.
The autopsy showed no track marks on her, Barr said.
State police last arrested Kendziorski March 3 after an altercation outside her home in Slippery Rock Township. The incident began with a domestic dispute involving her father.
During the incident, according to court documents, she screamed obscenities at a trooper, who told her to return to the house.
She later struggled with the trooper during which she grabbed his shirt and collar and yanked off his tie, police said. She also allegedly head-butted and spit at the officer.
Kendziorski was arraigned on felony assault and other charges and placed in Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.
After waiving those charges to court March 9, she was released from prison on her own recognizance.
