Man hospitalized after being hit by car

BUTLER TWP - A Worthington man who was struck by a car on Route 422 eastbound near the Route 356 on-ramp Friday evening is in stable condition, officials say.

Leonard Benson, 57, was on the roadway attempting to collect parts from his nearby, disabled pickup truck around 7:33 p.m., according to Butler Township Police,

A wheel apparently fell of the truck, and he’d retrieved that with the help of another motorist. However, another part of the truck also broke off and had been thrown to a location near the barrier.

Benson was attempting to retrieve that part when he“ran out in front of” a vehicle being driven eastbound by Jeffrey J. Fox, 52 of Kittanning.

Benson was struck and sustained serious injuries. He was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment.

Fox and a passenger inside car were not injured.

The investigation is still ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.

Route 422 was closed for a short time.
