Lightning likely cause to fire
CONCORD TWP — Lightning is the apparent cause of a shed fire on Zion Church Road Thursday morning.
State Trooper Luke Nelson, deputy fire marshal, said lightning may have a hit a pole, sending a surge through a high-voltage extension cord.
“It’s still under investigation,” Nelson said. “There is a high probability it is going to be lightning-related.”
He said other indications of the cause are weather history and witnesses seeing lightning at the time.
Nelson will check lightning strike data for corroboration.
“Nothing’s confirmed yet,” he said.
The shed fire at 198 Zion Church Road, the David Young residence, was reported in a 3:42 a.m. 911 call.
Firefighters stopped the blaze from spreading to other structures.
Chief Cody Craig of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department said the flames were contained to the 10-foot-by-20-foot shed, not reaching an adjacent shed or the home, which is 70 feet away.
However, the shed and its contents, including tools and a small front loader tractor, were destroyed.
“It was a total loss,” Craig said.
After dousing the fire, crews cleared debris to reach hot spots.
Roughly 20 firefighters responded to the call.
The Petrolia, North Washington and West Sunbury volunteer fire departments assisted Chicora.
Crews cleared around 5:30 a.m.
