Butler light display synced to holiday music
The Smith family at 114 Brown Ave. off Center Ave. near the Donut Connection in Butler is providing cheer in their neighborhood for the fifth consecutive Christmas season.
The Smith's have outfitted their home with Christmas lights that sync with 21 Christmas songs in a display that lasts more than one hour. The display is available for viewing each evening from 5 to 11 p.m. until at least New Year's night, said Donna Smith, who owns the home with her husband, Jim.
The display includes more than 5,000 lights, which are controlled by 14 quarter-sized circuit boards connected to a desktop computer.
The Smith's son, David, was inspired to create the display by his uncle, who decorated his grandparents' home when he was a child with many lights and Christmas carols playing randomly outside.
David, who has a background in computers and technical theater, learned to sync lights to music from an online hobbyist community whose members pursue such projects and are happy to share their knowledge.
All are welcome to view the free display, but are asked not to block the street or any nearby hydrants or driveways.
