Mars Borough is looking for volunteers for an upcoming commemorative occasion — one that doesn’t come around every day.

2023 will mark the Mars area’s 150th anniversary, and at an upcoming meeting locals from Mars and Adams Township will have a chance to get involved with the newly formed Mars 150 Planning Committee.

“We’re trying to attract people into helping out — we aren’t looking specifically for people willing to do x, y or z,” said Secretary/Treasurer Bonnie Forsythe. “This next meeting is going to be to try and get more people involved, since it is the whole general Mars community. We are looking to pull people in so we can have things in place, so that at the beginning of next year we are ready to go.”

Plans for celebrations in 2023 are in the early stages, but discussions have taken place about an event to kick off the festivities on New Year’s Eve 2022, Forsythe said. Other events may take place monthly during 2023.

“Some of the things we are going to try to do are not specific events; they are going to be year-long initiatives,” she added. “We’re also talking about opening up a competition for people to design a logo for the 150th anniversary.”

Forsythe hopes to reach out to various local residents, especially those who might be able to assist with spreading the word about the event or finding sponsorships.

“We need people who can help out on the day of events, we need people who can help with planning, we need people who can help gain sponsorships and donations, and we need people in the business community who generally can put the word out on social media,” she said. “The goal is to get these community organizations, like the library and historical society, and basically any other community organization that wants to participate, to get everybody involved.”

The planning meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on April 5 at the Mars Borough Education Building, 301 Arch St. Those interested can contact Mars Borough at 724-625-1858.
