Butler grads get top scholarships

Recent Butler High School graduates Matthew Schnur and Melissa Fogel are the recipients of the Rosanne and Jane Cavalero Scholarships worth $6,900.

The scholarships, distributed through the Wellington C. Carl Fund of the Pittsburgh Foundation, are presented in equal shares to male and female graduates from Butler High School having the highest cumulative grade point average and who pursue post-secondary education.

An honor student with distinction, Schnur is the son of David and Denise Schnur of Butler.While in school, he was active in baseball, diving, student council, peer mediation, National Honor Society and the Future Business Leaders of America.He was recognized as a top 10 state finalist for the U.S. Senate Youth Program and was nominated for Wendy's High School Heisman Award.Schnur also was awarded the Tribune-Review Outstanding Citizen Award, the First National Bank of Slippery Rock Scholars Program, and a $5,000 Vogeley Grant.He was also named to Who's Who Among American High School Students-Sports Edition 2004 and received the PHEAA Certificate of Merit.Schnur plans to attend Duquesne University where he will study pharmacy.

Also an honor student with distinction, Fogel is the daughter of Gary and Karen Fogel of Butler.While in school, she was a member of the prom committee. She is a letterwinner in National Honor Society and varsity cheerleading.Fogel was named to Who's Who Among America High School Students and the National Honor Roll. She placed third in the UCA Nationals and won the Gold Academic Achievement Award.She will attend Penn State University this fall with plans to major in biochemistry.
