FARMINGTON — Slippery Rock native Jacob Wolak won the putting portion of the Drive, Chip and Putt competition at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Tuesday on the way to a score of 130 and the subregional title.
Wolak, 14, scored a 50 in putting by making two.
He will move on to the regional event at Oakmont on Sept. 7 for a chance to advance to the national competitionm which will be held in April during the Masters at Augusta National.

NEW YORK — Major league batters are on pace to hit 600 more home runs than in any previous season, nearly 10% above the record set two years ago.There were 1,057 home runs in July, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, breaking the previous July record of 961 in 2004.A total of 4,478 home runs were hit in 1,621 games through Wednesday, an average of 2.76 per game. Batters are on pace to hit 6,712 home runs, well above the record 6,105 set in 2017 and up 20 percent from 5,585 last year.
Clemson is No. 1 in the USA Today preseason coaches' poll for the first time, followed by Alabama at No. 2.The defending champion Tigers received 59 of a possible 65 first-place votes and the Crimson Tide got the rest in the poll released Thursday. The Associated Press preseason Top 25 will be released Aug. 19.
PITTSBURGH — Recently retired forward Matt Cullen is sticking with the Pittsburgh Penguins, joining the hockey operations department.The team announced Thursday that Cullen will have a player development role.
