SAXONBURG — Incumbent District Judge Sue Haggerty won both the Republican and Democratic nominations Tuesday.

Haggerty, 64, of Saxonburg said she was glad to secure both nominations.

“That's pretty humbling,” she said.

According to unofficial results from the Butler County Elections Bureau, Haggerty beat Michael Sippey, 61, of Middlesex Township 2,008 votes to 832 votes, or 71 percent to 29 percent, for the Republican nomination. There was one write-in vote.

For the Democratic nomination, Haggerty won 878 votes to 387 votes, or 69 percent to 31 percent. There were three write-in votes.

The district covers Saxonburg and six townships: Buffalo, Clinton, Jefferson, Middlesex, Penn and Winfield.

Haggerty, who took office in 1998, said the support was overwhelming.

“It was even more than I expected,” she said. “People came out of the woodwork.”

Haggerty won by large margins in multiple precincts, including the borough.

In Saxonburg, she won the Republican nomination 193 votes to 35, or 85 percent to 15 percent, and the Democratic nomination 76 votes to 30 votes, 72 percent to 28 percent.

Haggerty said she even received donations from people she didn't ask.

Sippey, the assistant police chief for Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, won the voting in the Middlesex North Precinct with 135 votes to 107 votes, or 56 percent to 44 percent, on the Republican ballot and 69 votes to 46 votes, or 60 percent to 40 percent, on the Democratic side.

The race was close in the Middlesex South precinct, where Haggerty won the GOP nomination with 102 votes to 98 votes, or 51 percent to 49 percent.

Sippey, who also is an attorney, won the Democratic nomination in the Middlesex South precinct with 44 votes to 38 votes, or 54 percent to 46 percent.

He said it was no surprise that facing a longtime incumbent would be an uphill climb.

“I knew it was tough,” Sippey said. “Her campaign was really well organized.”

He said his results were good considering he is a political neophyte.

“I've never been in politics,” Sippey said.

He said the voters made their choice, but there are changes he would have liked to have made.

“I know I would have done a good job,” Sippey said.
