North Washington VFD ready for annual rodeo

NORTH WASHINGTON — The 56th annual World Championship North Washington Rodeo is set for next week, and organizers say it’s going to continue giving visitors what they love.

“Everything’s pretty much the same,” said Dave Hazlet, president of the North Washington Volunteer Fire Department and the rodeo’s chairman. “I can’t guarantee there won’t be a glitch, but we’re ready to rodeo here in North Washington.”

With more than $17,000 in prize money up for grabs, the rodeo — which is sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association — continues to be a draw for athletes and livestock making a splash at the national level.

“There’s a lot of talented people coming to compete on world-class livestock,” Hazlet said. “There’s a pile of world champions coming. The big guns come out for the prize money we put up.”

At the top of the list this year is teenager Garrett Tribble. The Bristow, Okla., bull rider was a revelation to Hazlet, who judges rodeo himself and saw Tribble in action earlier this year.

There will also be thousands of pounds worth of world-class livestock waiting to test athletes’ skills, Hazlet said.

North Washington’s rodeo events will feature the nation’s top ranked bucking horse, as well as award-winning bulls.

The rodeo also is staying true to its tradition as a stop for local rodeo athletes and high school-level rodeo talents on their way to national events. Hazlet said visitors can catch riders from Evans City, Saxonburg and West Liberty.

Of special note is the farewell performance of liberty horse trainer Jerry Wayne Olson and his horse, Justin Boots, who are back in North Washington after a layoff of several years. That specialty act will go on at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, rain or shine.

The rodeo, which benefits the volunteer fire department, will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Monday with the Rodeo Parade followed by food and entertainment at the Rodeo Arena, Route 38. Admission on Monday is free.

Gates at the arena open at 6 p.m. Tuesday through Aug. 22, and rodeo events begin at 8 p.m. Admission is $14 for adults and $6 for children ages 4 to 12.
