Teens sue hotel over alleged assault
CRANBERRY TWP — Two teenaged brothers who allege to have been sexually assaulted by a desk clerk while living at Candlewood Suites are suing the hotel.
The victims are not identified by name in the lawsuit, and the alleged abuser, 33-year-old Nancy A. Fields of Beaver County, is not named as a party in the lawsuit.
“She will be held accountable through the criminal justice system. The hotel also must be held accountable,” said attorney Benjamin Andreozzi of Harrisburg.
According to the lawsuit, the boys and their mother moved from a different state to the hotel in Sept. 2013 so that the boys’ mother could receive treatment for an unnamed “serious medical condition.”
The lawsuit alleges that while the mother was receiving medical treatment Fields befriended the boys, then “Fields’ behavior became increasingly inappropriate, manipulative and ultimately sexual,” the lawsuit alleges.
“It’s particularly disgusting that she preyed on these boy who were vulnerable because their mother was sick and they were new to the area,” Andreozzi said.
The lawsuit alleges that over a course of months and on a near daily basis, Fields assaulted the boys, showed them pornography and took sexually explicit photos of the boys. The abuse continued, according to the lawsuit, until the boys’ mother discovered Fields in a compromising position with one of her sons.
“(The mother) ... suffered an extreme exacerbation of a pre-existing condition, including but not limited to, brain aneurysms,” the lawsuit alleges.
The lawsuit further alleges guests and fellow employees complained about Fields’ interaction with the boys, but hotel management did nothing to stop it. Andreozzi alleges that lack of action empowered Fields to assault the boys.
The lawsuit asks for an unspecified amount of monetary damages.
“(Sexual assault) is not like a broken arm where the bone heals and you can move on with your life. It leaves a permanent scar for the rest of the victim’s life,” said Andreozzi, who also represented about a dozen victims in the Jerry Sandusky case at Penn State University.
The family no longer lives at the hotel, and Fields is no longer employed there.
The 9-page lawsuit was filed Monday in Allegheny County Court.
No one returned messages left at Candlewood or at the company’s parent group, Intercontinental Hotels Group Resources, which is headquartered in Atlanta.
Meantime, based on the same allegations, Fields in Butler County Court is facing 17 charges, including four counts of indecent exposure and two counts each of indecent assault and furnishing alcohol to minors.
Her next court hearing is July 15. However, a hearing could be held earlier to determine if Fields’ $10,000 bond should be revoked. Prosecutors are alleging that the defendant, who was ordered not to have contact with the victims on May 22 went to a restaurant where both victims are employed and stayed for about a half-hour after the establishment had closed. During that time, prosecutors allege Fields “would glare at the victims.”
Assistant District Attorney Patricia McLean declined to comment, and Fields’ defense attorney Gerald Cassady could not be reached.
