Steelers select WR

Oklahoma St. wideout taken in 2nd round

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Oklahoma State wide receiver James Washington in the second round of the NFL draft, giving the AFC North champions a boost at the position a day after they traded Martavis Bryant to Oakland.

Washington caught 226 passes for a school-record 4,472 yards and 39 touchdowns in four seasons with the Cowboys. Washington is already familiar with Heinz Field. He caught five passes for 124 yards when Oklahoma State blew out Pitt 59-21 last September.

This is the second straight year the Steelers have taken a wide receiver in the second round. They selected JuJu Smith-Schuster in the second round of the 2017 draft. Smith-Schuster’s rapid development made the talented but enigmatic Bryant expendable.

The 6-foot Washington can line up both in the slot and on the outside and can get downfield. He averaged 19.8 yards per reception during his college career.

Washington could step right into the starting lineup after the Bryant trade.

The Steelers had two picks in the third round and it was thought they would likely address inside linebacker with one of their two selections.

They didn’t.

In the third round, Pittsburgh traded up from 79 to 76 to select the quarterback who threw passes to Washington at Oklahoma State.

The Steelers took 6-foot-5, 235-pound Mason Rudolph, who was a three-year starter for the Cowboys.

Rudolph led the FBS in passing yards last season with 4,904.

Rudolph is reported to work hard in the film and weight rooms, but the knock on him is his leadership ability.

Scouts are concerned about his ability to take control of an NFL huddle/locker room.

Rudolph, though, has a similar frame to Ben Roethlisberger and will be brought along steadily as the heir apparent.

With their second third-round pick, the Steelers selected Western Michigan offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor.

The 6-foot-6, 320-pounder grades out as a developmental projected, according to scouts, with above-average strength and enough ability to become an NFL starter, most likely at right tackle.

The Steelers don’t have a fourth- or a sixth-round selection Saturday, but the team does have two fifth-round and a seventh-round pick.
