SUMMIT TWP — A 15-year-old boy was captured more than 24 hours after he escaped from the Summit Academy reform school Sunday night and traveled half away across the state in a stolen Jeep, authorities said.

But another student who ran away with the boy remains at large.

The youth was taken into custody about 11:20 p.m. Monday at an acquaintances's house in Newport, Perry County, about 200 miles from the facility in Summit Township.

State police said the boy, who is from Duncannon, Perry County, and two other students broke out of Summit Academy on Herman Road about 7:40 p.m. Sunday.

Trooper Ronald Kesten said the school staff chased after the trio and quickly caught one of the runaways, a 15-year-old boy from Masontown, Fayette.

But the Perry County boy and Donald James Chrisko, 18, of New Paris, Bedford County, got away from the school for adjudicated youths and young adults in grades 9-12.

Police were notified and searched for the escapees to no avail.

At 10:30 a.m. Monday, a homeowner on Beck Road — one to two miles from the school — discovered his red, 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee missing. The owner last saw the vehicle about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

The victim admitted that he had left the keys in the unlocked vehicle.

Authorities did not immediately know Monday if the stolen vehicle and the Summit Academy escape were connected.

But police that morning issued a be-on-the-lookout advisory that indicated that the teens could be driving the missing Jeep.

Kesten said the search eventually led to the house in Newport, where they found the missing 15-year-old and the Jeep. The boy was captured without incident but he wasn't talking either.

“He's been uncooperative,” Kesten said this morning.

The youth, who is facing a number of pending charges in connection with the escape, is being held in a Perry County juvenile detention facility.

Police do not know Chrisko's whereabouts. They also don't know if he and the boy drove away together from Summit Academy.

“We may get a better idea once we search the (Jeep),” Kesten said.

New Paris is about 110 miles west of Newport and a little more than 100 miles southeast of Summit Township.

Chrisko is described as being white, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 190 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes. He was wearing blue gym shorts with the name Summit Academy on them when he ran away.
