BUTLER TWP — The Butler Chapter of the American Red Cross honored two lifeguards Tuesday for their role in the rescue of a 6-year-old boy Thursday at Alameda Pool.

The recognition was part of the Butler Red Cross' annual luncheon.

Brothers Hans and Erik Bergh received certificates of recognition for extraordinary personal action for their part in rescuing Jared Chantz of Summit Township, who struck his head on the pool's diving board.

Both men are being nominated for a national Red Cross award for their actions, as well.

"I don't think there's time to think. You see it, your training takes over and you just react," said Hans Bergh, 20, who was manning a lifeguard tower and was first in the water.

"Everyone there on staff that day did their part. When something like that happens, you can't do it by yourself," he said

His brother Erik, 18, agreed, saying all nine of the pool employees on duty were involved in the rescue.

"My job was to keep his head and back straight, but more important, to keep him calm. That's the hardest part, reassuring him that he's going to be OK," said Erik Bergh, who was posted at the pool's first-aid station that day.
