Child endangerment charges filed

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — A township man is accused of overdosing on opioids last month while caring for two children at his home.

State police charged Stephen T. Gilkinson, 33, Monday with felony and misdemeanor counts of child endangerment.

Police said they were called Sept. 15 to the defendant’s home on Overlook Drive for a reported drug overdose. Ambulance crew members advised police that they had to use Narcan to revive Gilkinson.

The defendant was inside a shed in back of the house when Trooper Michael Torres spoke to him. Police said they saw an empty stamp bag of suspected drugs and hypodermic needles on a table.

Gilkinson “admitted to using heroin intravenously,” according to charging documents.

At the time, police said, he was the sole caretaker of his two children, who were inside the house and unattended. They were apparently unharmed.

District Judge Bill O’Donnell issued an arrest warrant Monday for Gilkinson. Online court records did not list an attorney for him, and he could not be reached for comment.
