HARRISVILLE — A man who escaped police custody still wearing one handcuff and no shoes is behind bars.

Eleven days after he managed to walk out of the Harrisville police station, John R. Barlow Jr., 55, of Grove City showed up Saturday at the Mercer County Jail.

“He told them he was there to turn himself in,” police Chief William Scheckler Sr. said Tuesday.

Missing, however, was the handcuff.

“He had his own boots on,” Scheckler also noted.

Barlow was moved Tuesday to the Butler County Prison where he's being held on $50,000 bail on a list of charges.

Police had been looking for the defendant since about 7:40 p.m. April 9 when he went missing after asking an officer to use the bathroom.

Earlier that evening, according to charging documents, police arrested Barlow in connection with a traffic stop on South Main Street. An officer eventually suspected he was also driving drunk.

Barlow is accused of making an initial run for it at the scene but the officer quickly caught him.

Police needed two sets of handcuffs for the suspect due to his hefty size. The arresting officer also removed Barlow's shoes to deter any future runaway attempt.

At the police station, he asked to use the bathroom. The officer removed the cuff from his right hand. His left hand remained cuffed, behind his back, to the loops on a handcuff belt.

But while the officer was momentarily busy with another duty, Barlow walked away. Harrisville and Slippery Rock police looked for but could not find the defendant.

The search continued until Saturday when the fugitive surrendered.

Scheckler didn't know where Barlow was during his time on the lam nor how he got his handcuff off.

“He wouldn't talk,” said Scheckler, who fetched the defendant and drove him back to Butler County. “He said he has an attorney.”

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Barlow on charges of escape, resisting arrest, DUI, disorderly conduct, altering a vehicle inspection sticker and eight traffic violations, including driving with a suspended license-DUI related.

He's also charged with two counts each of theft and receiving stolen property for allegedly taking the two pairs of handcuffs he was wearing when he got away.
