Cupid's Chase 5K slated for Saturday
FRANKLIN TWP — Cupid's Chase 5k has been around for a while.
The event will take place for the third time in Butler County when Lake Arthur Golf Club serves as home base for the charity race at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Proceeds from the race — hosted by Community Options, Inc. — are used to support people with disabilities in the Butler region.
The course runs from the golf course parking lot, along a road to Unionville and back again.
“The course is certified for the serious runners,” Community Options representative Timothy Hawk said. “We get competitive runners, college and high school runners.
“But we also get families who walk the course, people who jog it, walk with their dogs, people in wheelchairs ... It's available to everyone.”
Saturday's race will be one of 31 Cupid's Chase 5k events taking part in nine states at approximately the same time. Latrobe, Pittsburgh, York, Harrisburg, King of Prussia and Philadelphia are among other Pennsylvania towns hosting a race.
Cupid's Chase 5k races will also be taking place in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico.
Community Options netted over $100,000 with 6,000 runners in attendance throughout the country last year. This is the 12th year for the event nationwide.
“We had 56 runners finish the race here last year, but a lot more went out and did at least part of it,” Hawk said. “Some people register and don't run at at all, just to contribute to the cause.
“Our Butler race raised $6,300 last year.”
Pre-registration is $35 and can be done by visiting CUPIDSCHASE.org. Race-day registration is $45.
“We are talking about a road race in February, so you never know what the weather will be like,” Hawk said. “A lot of people do wait, gauge the conditions and register that day.”
Awards are presented to winners in 11 age groups as well as the top three male and female finishers overall. All participants receive a long-sleeved t-shirt that says “Available” or “Unavailable” in staying with the Valentine's Day theme.
“The red shirts say unavailable, the white shirts available,” Hawk said. “We should have plenty of shirts available for the race-day registrants.”
Through early registrations, donations and sponsorships, Hawk said the Cupid's Chase 5k at Lake Arthur Golf Club has already raised $3,600.
Basket raffles, a 50-50 drawing and live music will be part of Saturday's festivities as well.
Community Options has developed housing and employment programs for people with disabilities for more than 30 years. The organization serves thousands of people through more than 40 offices across 10 states.
