Rossmiller, Mars II up 2-0 in series
BUTLER TWP — Nick Rossmiller had no issue with pitching two days in a row for Mars II.
Since it was Game 2 of the Eagle County semifinals, it was an exciting proposition.
Rossmiller threw a complete game, helping Mars II beat Saxonburg 4-1 to take a 2-0 series lead.
“It kicks it up an extra notch,” Rossmiller said. “I just didn't want to let the team down.”
Rossmiller's Mars II teammates didn't let him down.
They turned three double plays and outfielders Alex Ziegler and Cullen Hinderliter sprawled out to make diving catches in the third and sixth innings, respectively.
“We were snake-bit today,” Saxonburg manager Dan Cunningham said. “They made some outstanding plays and plays that normally are a 50-50 shot.”
Mars II will try to close out the series today at 6 p.m. at Callery Field.
Rossmiller, who threw 2/3 of an inning to close Game 1 Tuesday, was college teammates with Mars II player-manager Eric King at Thiel College.
“He can throw whenever, that's the great thing about him,” King said. “He'd probably be ready to go tomorrow if I wanted him to.”
In his senior season at Thiel College in 2013, Rossmiller went 7-4 with a 2.90 ERA in 13 starts.
“I've always been able to throw back to back days,” Rossmiller said. “I always considered myself to have a rubber arm.”
Andy Onufrak puts Mars II ahead 1-0 by driving in Ziegler on a groundout.
Mars II's outstanding defense started in the first inning. Saxonburg's Dustin Lalle opened with a single off Rossmiller.
Brian Tougher followed with a single to the right-field fence.
A good relay throw allowed Mars II catcher Gabe Stephenson to tag a lunging Lalle out at the plate.
Rossmiller then walked Jay Cortese. Saxonburg coudn't capitalize as Ryan Fennell hit into a double play to end the inning.
We stepped up huge in the field,” King said. “The first baseman had a ton of picks. It was a team effort.”
Saxonburg tied the game in the fourth when Fennell drove in Tougher with a single.
That's when the game got away from Saxonburg. Ziegler and King reached on errors by shortstop Zane Voltz to start the fifth.
Gabe Stephenson followed with a double to score Ziegler. Evan Oswald extended the lead to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly.
“We made a couple of miscues out there that hurt us big time,” Cunningham said. “We had runners in scoring position and didn't get timely hits.”
Mars II added a fourth run in the sixth when King drove in Tim Geibel with a single.
