Connelly dominates Freeport

Saxonburg’s James Connelly was just two outs away from a perfect game before allowing two runs in an 8-2 victory over Freeport in Eagle County League baseball play on Monday.

Connelly struck out six and walked none in the win.

Saxonburg (8-5), which scored all of its runs in the bottom of the third frame, received two runs batted in from Andy Fritz and Cory Podvasnik and one apiece from Ryan O’Connor and Tim Devine.

David Schaffer tossed a complete game with three strikeouts as host Zelienople nipped Pine-Richland 3-2.

Brandon Durbin doubled and drove in a pair of runs for Zelie (3-11), which scored all three of its runs in the third inning.

Alex Ziegler singled twice and doubled, driving in three runs and scoring twice in Mars II’s 10-3 triumph over Cranberry Township at Marburger Field.

Tim Geibel added a single and two doubles with three runs scored and one batted in, John Crummy three singles and three runs scored.

Evan Oswald pitched a complete game for Mars II (9-2) with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Crummy and Darren Blakely had three hits each as Mars II defeated Pine-Richland, 12-1 on Friday.

Crummy had two singles, a double and scored two runs while Blakely had three singles and an RBI. Ziegler contributed a double, single, RBI and two runs scored.

Josh Friel, the first of three Mars II pitchers, got the victory. Pine-Richland was limited to five hits.
