H. Joseph “Joe” Canel

H. Joseph “Joe” Canel, 76, of Butler died Wednesday morning in the comfort of his home.

Born May 29, 1940, in Fox Chapel, he was a son of the late Homer Mitchell Canel and Berdena (Kessler) Canel.

Joe received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

He was a retired engineer and land surveyor, working for PennDOT, Bracken Construction and finally Lindy Paving.

He was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler, the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors, the Pennsylvania Asphalt Pavement Association, the Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania and the Summit Township Sportsmen Club. He loved hunting and fishing from Wyoming to North Bay to North Carolina and to Florida. Mostly he enjoyed his family and the time he spent with them.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Anne (Henkel) Canel, who he married April 28, 1962; two sons, John Canel and his wife, Graciela, of Atlanta, and Tom Canel and his wife, Marcy, of Saxonburg; one daughter, Penelope Anne Canel and her husband, Michael Hickey, of Mount Lebanon, Pa.; five grandchildren, Bailey Lewis, Maddie Canel, Lilly Canel, Helen Hickey and Nick Canel; one sister, Jean Eckert and her husband, William, of Aspinwall; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Verenes.

CANEL — Friends of H. Joseph “Joe” Canel, who died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler.Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 15120, Chicago, IL 60693, or to the American Cancer Society, 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15205.
